“Decatur in the year 2023 is a town with a balanced mix of residential and rural tracts of land. Its residents strive to protect its natural beauty, undeveloped land, and large stands of pristine woods. We encourage large contiguous blocks of land that preserve the rural atmosphere and character of the family farm and the pastoral views they provide. We maintain our air and water quality by limiting the number of animal units and controlling wastewater disposal and other undesirable industrial emissions. Development is concentrated in designated areas with infrastructure and design to serve this growth. The development of parks and recreational areas are encouraged along with protecting and preserving our Sugar River, Decatur Lake, and Mill Race. We surround the City of Brodhead, which makes its growth and development ours as well.”
Town of Decatur Comprehensive Plan Vision Statement
The Town of Decatur Planning Commission does not meet on a regular basis, but rather on a as needed basis to consider requests and make recommendations to the Decatur Town Board. The Planning Commission bases its decisions on a lengthy document called The Town of Decatur Comprehensive Plan. This plan is the result of a three year study to comply with the Wisconsin State Smart Growth Plan Law. The Town was assisted in devloping this plan by the Southwestern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission. The plan was officially adopted by the Decatur Town Board on October 26, 2005. A short summary of the goals and objectives of the Planning Commission follow:
- Protect and improve the health, safety, and welfare of the residents in the Town of Decatur.
- Preserve and enhance the quality of life for the residents of the Town of Decatur.
- Protect and preserve the community character of the Town of Decatur.
Planning Commission members are appointed by the Town Chairperson and approved by the Town Board for a three year staggered term. Terms begin on April 1 of a given year.
